History

Chana Songkhram Temple was built since the Ayutthaya period  (1351-1767 A.D.) and was originally called "Wat Klang Na '' as the surrounding area was rice fields. However, during the reign of King Rama I, “Krom Phrarajawang Boworn Maha Surasinghanat” the Department of the Grand Palace (Wang Na) came to renovate the temple and changed its name to "Wat Tong Pu '', which Tong Pu is means the place where soldiers gather to go to war. There are two theories about the origin of the name "Tong Pu''. The first theory is that it comes from the Mon village of "Tong Pu" near the temple (Mon is sub-culture of Myanmar), and the second theory is that it comes from another Mon temple called "Wat Tong Pu'' during the Ayutthaya period, where Mon monks were housed by King Rama I. It is believed that the original name from the Ayutthaya period was used for this temple. When Thailand achieved victory in the of Burmese-Siamese war (1785-1788), during the reign of King Rama I, the temple was renamed again to "Wat Chai Chana Songkhram'' and later shortened to "Wat Chana Songkhram" as it is known today.
